How do I regain the trust and respect of my co-workers?

Recently I was ped up for promotion and said some off color (but true) things about one of the promoted. I offended my leads and lost their respect because I spoke ill about the person they nominated for promotion and in turn made them look bad. I have been working really hard all year and would hate to be penalized from future promotions due to my actions. How can I regain their respect? Or am I doomed. Should I run away and never look back?
